As we enter into this Holy Season of Lent, we are cautioned to consider what motivates our piety. Jesus tells us, "Do not be like the hypocrites..." This term, which originally referred to the masked players in Greek theater, came to be a derogatory name given to people who behaved one way in public and another in private.

In these forty days of penitence, our acts of piety--whether they be prayer, fasting, acts of mercy, or the practice of other disciplines--should never be performed to elevate ourselves in the sight of others. Rather, we must remember that we are to perform our act so that our God who sees us in secret might reward us through a new and right relationship with God.
