The Deal to End All Deals!

“And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.” (Matt 5:13) When Jesus teaches us to lift up this petition in our prayers, he is speaking from experience. Before he began his ministry in Galilee, the Holy Spirit led Jesus out into the wilderness, in order to face temptation. Three times the devil entices our Lord to submit, in order to satisfy human desires. And three times, Jesus denies temptation, demonstrating trust in God’s plan for the world and obedience to God will in his own life.
Much as we might like to think that we would easily recognize the devil in our midst, he does not appear as the frightening figure so often depicted cloaked in red with horns atop his head and a pitchfork in his hand. Instead, the devil comes in the most alluring forms, in order to offer us the things of this world that we desire most, despite knowing they are not what God calls us to pursue. We must be on guard, because when the devil offers us a deal that’s too seems to be “too good to be true,” it’s just that!
